United Newland Crusaders otti voiton Vaahteraliigan häntäpään joukkueiden kohtaamisessa Lohjalla.  Helsinki Wolverines kaatui torstai-iltana lukemin 42-20 (30-6).

Harjun kentällä nähtiin torstaina kaikki Suomen kesän säävariantit taivaan kaataessa välillä vettä saavi kaupalla kentällä taistelevien joukkueiden niskaan. Sarjan pohjimmaiseksi jämähtänyt Wolverines pysyi Crusadersin vauhdissa hetken, mutta sortui jälleen karkeisiin virheisiin. Joukkueen ensimmäinen hyökkäyspeli päättyi pallon menetykseen rähmäyksellä ja toisen neljänneksen alkuminuutteihin mennessä helsinkiläiset olivat luovuttaneet pallon vastustajalle kolmasti. Kipeimmin pallonmenetykset tuntuivat helsinkiläisten red zone-peleissä, joista pallo luovutettiin vastustajalle kaksi kertaa. Apuvalmentaja Marcus Siiskosen mukaan virheet olivat oireita vahvasta ylilatautumisesta.  

Wolverines onnistui löytämään rytmiä hyökkäyspeliinsä ottelun kolmannella neljänneksellä, jonka helsinkiläiset veivät lukemin 14-6.  Hetkellisesti helsinkiläiset olivat pelissä jopa edellä edetyissä jaardeissa, mutta hyvä vire ei kestänyt loppuun saakka.

Helsinkiläisjoukkueessa illan parhaasta suorituksesta vastasi keskushyökkääjä Sebastian Lugora, joka juoksi ottelun ensimmäisellä neljänneksellä komean 69 jaardin touchdownin. Päävalmentaja Pekka Lamminsalon kikkapelit toimivat ajoin, ja pitivät joukkuetta mukana taistelussa. Ahmapuolustajista ahnaimmat taklaajat olivat Alvin Reels 11,5 ja Shay Netter  6,5 taklauksellaan.  Erityisesti Reels pelasi komean pelin.

Ottelun jälkeisessä haastattelussa Reels oli tyytyväinen joukkueensa taisteluilmeestä tappiosta huolimatta:

Rowlandille kauden komeimmat jaardiluvut

Crusaders lähti kotikaupunkinsa juhlaottelussa hakemaan näyttävää voittoa ennakkoon heikompana pidetyistä vieraistaan. UNC-valmennus antoi märällä kentällä pelatussa pelissä palloa yltäkylläisesti keskushyökkääjä Seth Rowlandille. Yhdysvaltalainen kiitti vastuusta kipittämällä jaardeja ja touchdowneja. Yhdysvaltalainen kantoi jo ottelun ensimmäisellä puoliskolla palloa peräti 21 kertaa ja keräsi pelissä 25 juoksullaan vaahteraliigakauden komeimman juoksujaardimäärän 216 jaardia ja kolme touchdownia. Ottelun lopussa peliaikaa sai nuori toisen polven jenkkifutari Arttu Blomqvist, joka keräsi juoksuillaan komeat 57 jaardia.

UNC:n vajaamiehinen puolustus teki pelissä sen mitä tarvitsi.  Ristiretkeläiset onnistuivat riistämään pallon Wolverines-pelaajilta neljä kertaa ja pysäyttivät helsinkiläisten hyökkäyksen red zonella yhtä monta kertaa. Crusaders-puolustajista Aleksi Riiheläinen tuntui ennättävän kentällä kaikkiin tilanteisiin ja mies keräsi tililleen kymmenen taklausta.  RJ Long onnistui kertaaleen katkaisemaan Rasmus Laalon heiton ja lisäsi kauden intteriensä määrän viiteen. Lukemalla Long nousee liigan syötönkatkotilaston kakkoseksi. Mainitsemisen arvoinen on myös Ben Helletin komea 78 jaardin touchdown, jonka mies juoksu aloituspotkun palautuksesta todella pitkän juoksun päätteeksi.

Ottelun vakuuttavimmaksi pelaajaksi valittu aina aurinkoinen Rowland kertoi Ruutu-haastattelussaan olevansa huonoimmillaan sadekelillä ja oli todella uupunut ensimmäisen puoliskon urakoinnin päätteeksi:

Vaahteraliiga palaa maaottelutauoltaan torstaina United Newland Crusadersin isännöidessä Helsinki Wolverinesia Lohjalla. Molemmat joukkueet ovat menettäneet mahdollisuutensa nousta sarjan mitalipeleihin, joten panoksena on maine ja kunnia.

United Newland Crusaders on lupaavan alkukauden ja komean Roosters-voiton jälkeen ajautunut kolmen ottelun tappioputkeen. Tappioista tuorein, Royalsille hävitty peli, merkitsi viimeistenkin realististen playoff-oljenkorsien katkeamista lohjalaisilta. Joukkue lähtee kotipeliinsä edelleen täydellä miehityksellä, eikä ainakaan vielä näy merkkejä ulkomaalaispelaajien kotiuttamisesta.

Wolverinesin kausi on ollut vaikea alusta loppuun. Nuorella joukkueella on ollut suurta epäonnea jenkkipelaajiensa kanssa ja vahvistuksilta odotettu panos on jäänyt odotettua vähäisemmäksi. Torstain pelissä mukana on kuitenkin kaikki kolme kiintiöpelaajaa.

Crusaders lähtee kotikaupunkinsa Lohjan 700-vuotis juhlaotteluksi profiloidussa pelissä taisteluun täydellä heittokalustollaan. Kolhuja kokenut Cedric Johnson on jälleen mukana pelaavassa kokoonpanossa, joten pelinrakentaja Raleigh Yeldellillä on käytössään yksi liigan vaarallisimmista laiturirostereista.  Kun vielä vastassa on tilastojen valossa liigan heikoin heittopuolustus, tultaneen palloa laittamaan lentoon useammankin kerran UNC:n hyökkäysvuoroilla.

Osa-alue, jossa Wolverines nokittaa tilastoissa lohjalaiset, on juoksupuolustus. Sarjan kärkitaklaajiin kuuluvan Willy Lindforsin loukkaantuminen on merkinnyt vastuun jakamista toisille pelaajille ja torstaina Crusadersin liukkaan keskushyökkääjän, Seth Rowlandin vartioiminen jaetaan Alvin Reelsin, Max Poikosen ja Santtu Jääskeläisen vastuulle.  Viime kaudella Crusadersin pelinrakentajana palennut Shay Netter on merkitty Wolverinesin rosteriin, mutta hänen nimeään ei löydy avauskokoonpanosta.

Crusaders lähtee peliin ennakkosuosikkina, mutta nuorella Wolverines-joukkueella on vahvaa tahtoa näyttää kehittyneensä kauden aiemmissa peleissä, ja haastaa lohjalaiset tosissaan. Joukkueet kohtasivat toisensa edellisen kerran liigan avauskierroksella, jolloin UNC oli parempi lukemin 6-35.
