Vaasassa, Suomen aurinkoisimmassa kaupungissa satoi perjantaina vettä rankkasateen lailla, ja kotijoukkue Royalsille se sopi erinomaisesti. Vaasalaiset juoksivat ottelussa 62 kertaa ja heittivät vain kolmesti. Se riitti, sillä vierasjoukkue Crusaders ei saanut Tom Suosteen johdolla vyörynyttä juoksua padottua. Royals voitti 39–22 (21–14), nousi sarjataulukossa sijalle kolme ja samalla murskasi Crusadersin haaveet pudotuspeleistä.

Royalsin pelisuunnitelma oli juosta palloa ja siinä se myös onnistui. Crusadersin takamies Aleksi Riiheläinen totesi ottelun jälkeen haastattelussa, että vieraat osasivat tätä odottaa, mutta keinoja se ei pysäyttämiseen lopulta keksinyt.

Royals juoksi ottelussa 63 kertaa, mikä on Vaahteraliigan uusi ennätys. Vuonna 2008 Tampere Saints juoksi Jyväskylä Jaguaareja vastaan 58 kertaa, joten Royals otti tämän ennätyksen nyt itselleen viiden yrityksen marginaalilla.

Illan hahmo oli Tom Suoste, joka juoksi 37 yrityksellä 178 jaardia ja teki yhden touchdownin. Suoste, joka ottelun jälkeen kiitti työstä omaa hyökkäyksen linjaansa, oli hänkin lähellä rikkoa ennätyksen. 20 vuotta sitten, kaudella 2003 Porvoo Butchersin Tommi Padatsu juoksi Turku Trojansia vastaan 40 kertaa, joten Suoste oli vain kolmen yrityksen päässä ennätyksestä.

Royals heitti ottelussa ainoastaan kolme kertaa. Yksikään niistä ei onnistunut. Pelinrakentaja-koordinaattori Tim Morovick lienee silti tyytyväinen iltapuhteeseensa. Morovick vahvisti asemiaan liigan juoksutilaston kärjessä juoksemalla kolme touchdownia. 12 yrityksellä yhdysvaltalainen juoksi 99 jaardia. Alpha Jalloh kokosi hänkin kymmenellä yrityksellä 72 jaardia ja teki yhden TD:n.

Crusadersista nousi esiin uusia onnistujia

Ennen ottelua Crusaders oli listannut laitahyökkääjä Cedric Johnsonin epävarmaksi eikä Johnson lopulta pystynyt pelaamaan. Tämä pakotti pelinrakentaja Raleigh Yeldellin jakamaan palloa laajemmin muille pelaajille. Siinä Yeldell myös onnistui, mistä osoituksena Alfonso Messinan uran ensimmäinen Vaahteraliiga-touchdown sekä ranskalaislaitahyökkääjä James Nimi Nzitan tekemät kaksi touchdownia.

Seth Rowland juoksi Crusadersille pisimmillään 35-jaardisen pelin ja eteni pisimmällä heitollaan 36 jaardia. Kriittisillä hetkillä Royals kuitenkin onnistui muun muassa 9 kertaa taklanneen Raul Khalifan johdolla pitämään Rowlandin kurissa. Khalifa näytti jälleen nopeuttaan myös pallon kanssa sinkaisemalla heti toisen puoliajan alkuun 95-jaardisen aloituspotkun palautuksen maaliin asti.

Yeldell onnistui 23 kertaa 45 heitossaan, kokosi jaardeja 223 ja heitti siis kolme touchdownia ilman syötönkatkoa, mitä voi pitää sadekelin pelissä ilman varsin hyvänä tuloksena. Nzita koppasi Yeldellin heittoista lähes puolet (11) ja heittojaardeista yli puolet (113).

Royals kuitenkin onnistui myös kolmesti Yeldellin säkittämään. Demarco Artisin säkitys nosti miehen kausisaldon kymmeneen säkitykseen. Vaahteraliigan ennätys, Crocodilesin Gerald Goodenin nimissä vuodelta 2014, on 11,5 säkitystä. Artisilla on vielä kaksi ottelua aikaa tavoitella ennätystä itselleen.

Crusaders eteni ottelussa enemmän (345-378), se ei menettänyt palloa kertaakaan ja sillä yli puolet vähemmän rangaistuksia kuin Royalsilla. Paitsi, että Royalsin juoksupeli oli pysäyttämätön ja että Royals teki touchdownin aina päästessään redzonelle, löytyy ratkaisu myös vieraiden kolmansien yrityksien suorituksista: Crusaders pelasi ottelussa 12 kertaa kolmannen yrityksen pelin. Vain kerran se silloin eteni uusiin.

Omalta osaltaan Royals naulasi ottelun ratkaisun kolmannen ja neljännen neljänneksen pitkillä hyökkäysvuoroillaan. Kaksi vuoroa meni peräkkäin maaliin: ensin 12 peliä ja 70 jaardia, sitten 8 peliä ja 60 jaardia. Jälkimmäisen myötä päätösneljännestä oli alle puolet jäljellä ja lukemat tuolloin ratkaisevasti 39–14.

Viime viikon lauantaina Kuopiossa Royalsin päävalmentaja Juha-Matti Rajala totesi Royalsin olevan pakkovoiton edessä. Nyt, vajaata viikkoa myöhemmin Royals on ottanut kaksi tärkeää voittoa perätysten ja nousi perjantaina Steelersin ohi sarjataulukon sijalle kolme. Vaasalaisilla on vielä jäljellä kaksi runkosarjan ottelua: Botnia Bowl eli kauden toinen ottelu Crocodilesia vastaan ja ottelu sarjakakkosta Butchersia vastaan. Porvoolaiset Royals on jo kertaalleen tällä kaudella kaatanut. Molemmat ottelunsa Royals pelaa kotikentällään.

Crusadersin osalta selvää on nyt se, että kausi tulee päättymään runkosarjaan. Lohjalaiset ovat jo tällä kaudella ottaneet kolme voittoa, kun se kahden edellisen kauden aikana voitti yhteensä neljä kertaa. Silti kauden parhaimmissa peleissä joukkue näytti, että sillä on sanansa sanottavana. Myös Crusadersilla on runkosarjassa vielä kaksi kotiottelua jäljellä. Ensin Wolverinesia vastaan ja päätöskierroksella Butchersia vastaan.

Vaahteraliigan 11. peliviikon toinen peli otellaan Kaarlen kentällä Vaasassa perjantaina. Kumpikaan, ei kotijoukkue Royals eikä vierasjoukkue Crusaders – ole pudotuspelijoukkue nyt eikä ole sitä vielä vaikka perjantaina voittaisi. Mutta yksi asia on selvää: se kumpi perjantaina häviää, voi käytännössä heittää välierähaaveille hyvästit.

Joukkueet saapuvat kauden toiseen keskinäiseen kohtaamiseensa sangen erilaisista lähtökohdista. Royals piti jatkohaaveensa yllä hakemalla viikko sitten sateisen taisteluvoiton Steelersistä. UNC puolestaan jäi Roostersin linjajyrän alle kotikentällään ja kärsi kauden suurimman tappionsa lukemin 7–49.

Perjantaihin lähdettäessä Royalsilla on parempi asetelma myös sarjataulukossa. Kun molemmat ovat pelanneet yhdeksän ottelua, on vaasalaisilla voittoja neljä ja lohjalaisilla kolme. Crusadersilla sen sijaan on puolellaan aiemman keskinäisen ottelun voitto. Viikkoa ennen juhannusta yhdessä kauden jännittävimmissä ja pisterikkaimmissa otteluista Crusaders nousi lopulta voittoon lukemin 42–35.

Royals-pelaaja, joka varmasti janoaa revanssia kiivaimmin, on vaasalaisten kokenut pelinrakentaja Timothy Morovick. Kesäkuussa Lohjalla pelatessaan Morovickillä oli menossa kauden hankalin jaksonsa: hän toki heitti 304 jaardia ja kolme touchdownia mutta myös neljä syötönkatkoa. Royals eteni ottelussa lähes 500 jaardia, mutta joutui siis poistumaan häviäjänä ottelusta. Tuolloin kaksi intteriä ottanut takamies Curtis Slater operoi nyt Keski-Euroopassa eikä siis ole perjantaina Crusadersin kokoonpanossa mukana.

Pelinrakentamisen lisäksi myös joukkueensa hyökkäyskoordinaattorina toimivan Morovickin kausi kokonaisuutena ollut varsin onnistunut. Hän on heittänyt 15 touchdownia mutta myös juossut 15 touchdownia, mikä on koko sarjan ykkösluku. Morovickin lisäksi UNC:n on keksittävä keinot pysäyttää Alpha Jallohin liikkeet niin laitahyökkääjänä, keskushyökkääjänä kuin palauttajana. Viime viikolla Jalloh oli Royalsille kaikki kaikessa ja ennakoi Ruutu-haastattelussa myös jo tämänkin viikon ottelua.

Crusaders pelaa parasta liigakauttaan

Kaudella 2022 Crusaders voitti kaksi ottelua (kahdesti Kotka Eaglesin). Saldo oli sama myös lohjalaisten liigadebyyttikaudella 2021, jolloin se loppukauden voitollaan Royalsista varmisti sarjapaikkansa. Nyt laarissa on jo kolme voittoa: Royalsin lisäksi myös Roostersista sekä Wolverinesista. Lisäksi huomionarvoisia ovat kaksi niukkaa tappiota sarjakärki Crocodilesille sekä hallitsevalla mestarille Steelersille, mikä viimeistään todisti kaikille sen, että hyvänä päivänä UNC voi voittaa sarjassa kenet tahansa.

Seth Rowland on keskushyökkääjänä säihkyvä ilmestys. Juoksutilaston kakkosnimi kantoi palloa kauden aiemmassa Royals-ottelussa 9,9 jaardin keskiarvolla ja sai tuolloin tukea myös pelinrakentaja Raleigh Yeldelliltä, jonka bruttojuoksujaardit nousivat tuolloin 95:ään.

Crusadersin murheeksi on mainittu hyökkäyksen linja, mikä toki näkyy tilastoista. UNC-pelinrakentajia on säkitetty 27 kertaa, mikä on liigan suurin lukema selvällä marginaalilla. Paluun linjan aloituskokoonpanoon tekee nyt Nuutti Paavola, joka oli edellisen kerran aloituksessa peliviikolla yksi. Royals, joka vastikään vahvisti puolustuksen linjaansa ruotsalaisella Jatta Nhjiellä, on Demarco Artisin johdolla säkitystilaston jaetulla kärkisijalla.

Omalta osaltaan vierasjoukkueen tilannetta hankaloittaa myös kokoonpanon epävarmuus. Muun muassa Cedric Johnsonin osallistuminen otteluun on vielä aattoiltana epävarmaa.
