Kuopio Steelers palasi voitokkaasti pitkältä keskikesän tauoltaan vaahteraliigaviheriöille. Wasa Royals kaatui Kaarlen kentällä niukasti lukemin 21-24 (14-14). Ratkaiseva ero syntyi kuopiolaisten onnistuneen kenttäpotkumaalin tuloksena.

Royals ja Steelers palasivat juhannustauoltaan liigakentälle molemmilla tappiopeli takanaan. Kuopiolaisten peli ei ole ollut parhaalla tasolla keskushyökkääjä Le’Anthony Reasnoverin jätettyä joukkueen toukokuun lopulla.  Sarjanousija Wasa Royals on pelannut alkukauden peleissään viihdyttävää jenkkifutista, mutta toistuvat virheet ovat estäneet pistetilin kartuttamisen kahta voittoa runsaammaksi. Lauantain pelissä Royalsilla oli erinomaiset mahdollisuudet voittaa hallitseva mestari, mutta viisi heitettyä syötönkatkoa olivat liikaa tasoitusta rutinoitunutta savolaisjoukkuetta vastaan pelattaessa.

Vaasalaisten yhdysvaltalainen pelinrakentaja Timothy Morovic oli pitkään vaahteraliigan ainoa pelinrakentaja, jonka heittoja ei oltu katkaistu.  Kun juhannuksen alla Crusadersin onnistui poksauttamaan intteripullon korkin apposen avoimeksi neljällä katkollaan, jatkoivat kuopiolaiset samaan tahtiin Kaarlen kentällä.  Morovivk heitti pelissä viisi syötönkatkoa, joista kaksi viimeisen neljänneksen hetkillä, jolloin joukkueella oli mahdollisuus nousta ottelussa johtoasemaan.  Laitahyökkääjistä Alpha Jalloh teki kentällä taikatemppujaan, mutta muut laiturit eivät yltäneet parhaisiin suorituksiinsa kotiyleisön edessä.  Tryout-sopimukselle Vaasaan saapunut italialainen Bruno Escobar ei saanut toivottua alkua kaudelleen Suomessa, eikä myöskään aiemmin terävästi pelannut Kelvin Godvin ollut parhaimmillaan.

Tuttuun tapaan Royalsin riveistä näyttävimpiä suorituksia nähtiin vaahteraliigan säkkikuninkaan, DeMarco Artisin toimesta. Lauantain 2,5 säkitystä nostava miehen säkkilukenan yhdeksään, olla irtoaa ylivoimainen kärkipaikka kyseisessä liigatilastossa. Aloituslinjan takana kuopiolaispelinrakentajia pääsivät taklaamaan myös Lamin Latikka ja Raul Khalifa.

Steelersin kova puolustuslinja piti lauantaina Royalsin juoksupelin hyvin kurissa. Vaasalaisten kaksi juosten tehtyä touchdownia syntyivät pelinrakentaja Morovickin juoksuista ja alkukauden peleissä komeita tilastoja tehtaillut Tom Suoste kartutti tilastojaan ainoastaan 26 jaardilla.  Näin Suoste kommentoi pelin jälkeen joukkueen suoritusta sekä edessä lähipäivinä edessä olevia otteluita:

Steelersin lauantaisen voiton avaimena olivat rutiini ja tasaisuus. Joukkueen hyökkäyksestä on vaikea nostaa esille erityisiä huippusuorituksia. Hyökkäyslinja pelasi hyvän pelin, vaikka ajoin liigan säkkikuningas, Royalsin Artis pääsi ahdistelemaan kuopiolaisten pelinrakentajia aggressiivisuudellaan. Linja teki kuitenkin päätyönsä erinomaisesti raivaten tietä tasaisesti jaardeja takoneille back-up keskushyökkääjille, Isaak Marshallille sekä Noah Choatelle.  Pelinrakentaja Ambro Urjanssonin peli ei ollut loisteliasta, mutta yhdysvaltalainen laituri Vincent MacDonald onnistui venymään tiukoissa paikossa riittäviin suorituksiin.

Ottelun lopulta ratkaisseen kolmen pisteen eron Steelers saavutti pelin kolmannella neljänneksellä Markus Ojainvälin potkumaalilla.

Kuopiolaisten puolustuksessa tukimies Akileis Leroy keräsi jälleen suurimman taklauspotin, mutta erityismaininnan ansaitsee takapuolustaja Lars Steffen, joka onistui lauantaina nappaamaan kiinni kaksi Royals-pelinrakentajan heittoa. Steelers saavutti pelistä toivomansa kaksi pistettä, mutta suoritusten pitää parantua merkittävästi,  mikäli joukkue haluaa jatkaa voittoputkeaan ensi torstaina hyvävireisen Butchersin kustannuksella.

Pohjola Vakuutus palkitsi ottelun vakuuttavimpana pelaajana keskushyökkääjän roolissa onnistuneen Marshallin, mutta tällä kertaa Ruudun haastatteluun pääsi lähes yhtä paljon jaardeja juoksullaan kerännyt Noah Choate:

Royalsin urakka jatkuu jo tulevana keskiviikkona, jolloin Kaarlen kentälle saapuu perjantaina oman pelinsä hävinnyt Helsinki Roosters.  Vaasalaisten ottelusuma jatkuu heti perään kahdella Helsingin reissupelillä, joista Wolverines kohdataan lauantaina 8.7. ja Roosters uudestaan 13.7. Joukkue pelaa siis neljä peliä 13 päivän sisällä, joka lienee omanlaisensa liigaennätys.

Wasa Royals ja Kuopio Steelers taistelevat tärkeistä sarjapisteistä lauantaina Kaarlen kentällä Vaasassa. Molemmilla joukkueilla on alla tappio ja lisäpisteet sarjataulukossa olisivat tarpeen taistelussa playoff-paikasta ja kotiedusta.

Kuopio Steelers pelaa nyt ensimmäisen ottelunsa kesäkuun 10. päivä kärsityn Butchers-tappion jälkeen. Pitkän tauon aikana joukkueeseen ei ole hankittu korvaavaa pelaaja tähtikeskushyökkääjä Le’Anthony Reasnoverin tilalle ja myös Tuukka Lehtonen on yhä telakalla. Lähtöasetelma peliin on sama kuin kesäkuisessa tappiopelissä Porvoossa.

Wasa Royals on juhannustauon aikana hankkinut vahvistusta hyökkäyskalustoonsa ja lähtee 13 päivää kestävään neljän pelin sumaansa hyvistä asemista. Joukkueen valmennuksen isona tehtävänä on pelin johtamisen lisäksi pyrkiä jakamaan kuormitusta rosterilleen mahdollisimman tasaisesti. Lauantaipelin jälkeen seuraavan kerran kentälle joudutaan jo keskiviikkona ja edessä siintää myös seuraavana lauantaina vastaan tuleva Helsingin reissu.

Lauantain kotijoukkue Royals on esittänyt kauden alun peleissä positiivista taisteluilmettä ja erityisesti heittopeli on ollut tuloksellista.  Tasapainoa hyökkäykselle tuo kanuunankuulana tunnettu keskushyökkääjä Tom Suoste, joka käyttää kaiken tarvittavan tilan hyväkseen vastustajan puolustuksen levittäessä muodostelmaansa heittouhan edessä. Lähes sadan jaardin ottelukeskiarvolla rynnivä Suoste on tehnyt kahden TD:n ohella joukkueelleen juoksu-uhan, jonka ansiosta pelinrakentaja Timothy Morovick ja Alpha Jalloh ovat saaneet tilaa omille ratkaisuilleen. Lauantain peliin vaasalaiset esittelevät uutena jokerikorttina italialaisen laitahyökkääjänsä Bruno Escobarin, jolla on suuri tarve antaa näyttöjä tryout-sopimuksensa vakinaistamiseksi.

Kuopio Steelers on pitänyt syvää radiohiljaisuutta Porvoossa koetun tappionsa jälkeen.  Useimmat lajia seuraavat odottivat yleensä terhakkaasti tilanteisiin reagoivalta seurajohdolta nopeita toimia keskushyökkääjä Reasnoverin lähtöön, mutta mitään näkyvää ei asian osalta ole tapahtunut.  Yhdysvaltalainen tähtipelaaja sai Vaahteraliigan kurinpidolta neljän ottelun pelikiellon ja lauantain Royals-peli on järjestyksessään kolmas, jos aihetta lähestyy tästä näkökulmasta.

Vaasaan Steelers-hyökkäys lähtee lähes samalla kokoonpanolla kuin kesäkuun edelliseen peliinsä. Noah Choate palaa pelaavaan kokoonpanon ja tuo lisää vaihtoehtoja hyökkäyksen pallolliseen suorittamiseen nopeutensa ansiosta. Pelissä katseet kohdistuvat kuitenkin pelinrakentaja Ambro Urjanssoniin, joka surullisessa Butchers-pelissä siirtyi sivurajalle kesken pelin antaen tilaa kakkos-QB Johan Rabinille. Onko Urjansson täydessä terässä ja onko edellisen pelin mörköt karistettu hartioilta.

Molemmat joukkueet ovat tunnettuja vahvasta linjapelaamisestaan. Lauantaina mielenkiintoinen match-up tulee olemaan Steelers-hyökkäyslinjan ja Royalsin DeMarco Artisin kaksintaistelu. Vaasalaisten yhdysvaltalaispelaaja on liigan suvereeni säkityskuningas onnistuttuaan naulaamaan vastustajan pelinrakentajan maihin aloituslinjan takana jo 6,5 kertaa. Steelersin kuuluisa OL saa tehdä parhaan suorituksensa suojellakseen nuiorta suomalaispelinrakentajaansa karulta kohtalolta.
