United Newland Crusaders ja Wasa Royals pelasivat tasaisen ja tasokkaan vaahteraliigakamppailun lauantaina Lohjalla. Tasatahtiin pisteitä tehtailleista joukkueista Crusaders vei voiton lukemin 42–35 (21-21).

Lauantain isäntäjoukkue aloitti pelin vahvasti. Royalsin avaava hyökkäysdraivi pysäytettiin kolmeen yrityksen ja UNC:n ensimmäinen hyökkäyspeli päätyi Seth Rowlandin vastustamattoman juoksun tuloksena maalialueelle. Molemmat joukkueet tehtailivat pelin kolmen ensimmäisen neljänneksen aikana TD:t per neljännes tasatahtiin ja ratkaisevan kaksitoistaminuuttisen käynnistyessä Royals oli niukassa 27–28 johdossa onnistuttuaan blokkaamaan yhden Crusadersin lisäpisteyrityksistä.

Ottelun viimeisellä neljänneksellä ilmassa oli ratkaisun tuntua, kun Royals-pelinrakentaja Timothy Morovick siirsi joukkueensa kolmen jaardin juoksullaan 27–34 johtoon. Kasper West monotti lisäpistepotkulla vaasalaisten johtomarginaaliksi kahdeksan pistettä ja peliaikaa oli jäljellä kuusi minuuttia. Tässä pelin vaiheessa Crusadersin tuore keikkapelinrakentaja Raleigh Yeldell alkoi ansaitsemaan palkkaansa kuljettamalla pallon hyvän hyökkäysdraivin päätteeksi 16 jaardin juoksullaan maaliin. Kun Seth Rowland onnistui survomaan pallon maalialueelle kahden lisäpisteen arvoisesti, oli peli tasan 35–35 ja aikaa jäljellä 2 minuuttia 29 sekuntia.

Ottelu ratkesi Royalsin seuraavalla hyökkäysvuorolla.  Alkukauden kolmessa pelissä ilman syötönkatkoja pelannut Morovick heitti ratkaisevan draivin toisessa pelissä pallon UCN:n Rodrigo Velezin hyppysiin ja espanjalaisen onnistui palauttamaan pallon Royalsin 9 jaardin viivalle. Seth Rowland juoksi pallon maaliin yhdellä pelillä ja Adrian Gallardon potku viimeisteli ottelun loppulukemiksi 42–35.

Pelinrakentaja Morovickin epäonnisen iltapäivän päätti vielä pelin neljäs heitetty syötönkatko, jonka nappasi haltuunsa ottelun vakuuttavimmaksi pelaajaksi valittu Crusadersin Curtis Slater. Näin Morovick kommentoi päivän peliä, sekä juhannuksen jälkeen joukkueen edessä oleva ottelusumaa:

Royals-hyökkäys keräsi pelissä komeat 492 jaardia ja voitti UNC:n kollegansa 131 jaardilla, mutta vain tehdyt pisteet lopulta ratkaisevat tuloksen. Neljä pallonmenetystä oli liikaa lauantaina.  Crusadersin pelinrakentaja Raleigh Yeldell pelasi kelpo pelin harjoiteltuaan joukkueensa kanssa vasta vajaan viikon ajan. Kolme heitettyä touchdownia, 151 jaardia ja yksi syötönkatko olivat riittävä suoritus voittoon.

Nopeajalkaisena tunnettu Yeldell väläytteli juoksutaitojaan vasta ottelun päätösneljänneksellä ja tulos oli komea.  Osin miehen juoksuintoa saattoi latistaa Royals puolustuksen antama raju paine läpi pelin. Royalsin puolustuslinjan DeMarco Artis vankisti asemaansa Vaahteraliigan säkkikuninkaana lisäten tilastoihin 2,5 säkitystä.  Royals-puolustuksen nuorisotähti, Raul Khalifa oli jälleen joukkueensa paras taklaaja, tällä kertaa seitsemällä taklauksellaan.

Crusaders-puolustuksen ratkaisijoita olivat syötönkatko napanneet Curtis Slaters (2 kpl), RJ Long ja Rodrigo Velez.  Eniten taklauksia kirjattiin Aleksi Kyllille (9,5 kpl).

Morovickin nollatilston ohella myös toinen nolla paukkui lauantaina Ojamon kentällä. Crusaders ei ollut onnistunut tekemään aiemmissa peleissä yhtään juosten tehtyä touchdownia, mutta lauantaina niitä syntyi kolme. Kahden juoksu-TD:n Rowland oli silmin nähden iloinen ottelun tuloksesta ja suorituksistaan:

Vaahteraliiga jää nyt juhannustauolle. Seuraavan kerran liigaa pelataan torstaina 29.6. jolloin Porvoon Butchers saa vieraakseen Helsinki Wolverinesin.

Lauantain Vaahteraliigapeli United Newland Crusadersin ja Wasa Royalsin välillä on viimeinen liigaottelu ennen juhannusta. Pelissä on panoksena paljon loppukesän playoff-asetelmien kannalta.

UNC:lle ja Wasa Royalsille on Roostersin haasteiden takia avautunut loivempi polku playoff-taisteluihin.  Isäntäjoukkue Crusaders on onnistunut kairaamaan vasta yhden voiton alkukauden peleistään, mutta joukkueen isot panostukset rosteriin ovat vielä jäänet ulosmittaamatta tärkeissä liigapeleissä.  Lauantaina on edessä sellainen isolla T:llä. Crusadersin ja Royalsin keskinäinen ”neljän pisteen peli” antaa suuntaa juhannuksen jälkeisten taistelujen asetelmille.

Royalsin tärkein konkreettinen saavutus alkukaudelta on painava vierasvoitto Porvoon Butchersista. Nuori joukkue on osoittanut pelaavansa hyvää jenkkifutista ja voitto Lohjalla nostaisi vaasalaiset hyviin asemiin sarjataulukossa ainakin sarjatauon ajaksi. Royalsin todellinen tasonmittauksen hetki koittaa juhannuksen jälkeen, kun edessä on peräti kolme sarjapeliä yhdeksän päivän jaksolla.

Crusadersilla uusi pelinrakentaja

Crusaders esittelee lauantaina kotiyleisölleen uuden pelinrakentajan. Juoksuvoimaisena edellisellä Suomen visiitillään tunnettu 30-vuotias Raleigh Yeldell saapuu johtamaan lohjalaisten hyökkäystä ja odotukset ovat korkealla. Onnistuuko yhdysvaltalainen sopeutumaan viikon varoajalla Robert Johnsonin koordinoimaan nopeatempoiseen heittohyökkäykseen? Ainakaan laitahyökkääjistä onnistuminen ei tule uupumaan.  (Yeldell on merkitty liigan tulospalvelussa joukkueen pelaajalistalle, mutta ei aloituskokoonpanoon).

Crusaders pystyy laittamaan pallojen vastaanottajiksi kolme EU-statuksella pelaavaa yhdysvaltalaista (RJ Long, Cedric Johnson, Curtis Slater), jotka jokainen tunnetaan historiastaan äärimmäisen vaarallisina pallotaitureina. Kun trioa säestää keskushyökkääjän paikalla pelaava taskuraketti Seth Rowland, alkaa UNC:n pallollinen hyökkäys olla erinomaisia hyökkäyslinja blokkeja vaille playoff-tasoa. Yelldellin heittoja seuratessa huomiona se, että Royalsin puolutus on onnistunut katkaisemaan vastustajan pelinrakentajan heiton vasta yhden kerran, jolla lukemalla joukkue pitää häntäpaikkaa sarjan puolustustilastoissa.

Morovickilla ei yhtään syötönkatkoa

Royalsin pelinrakentana Timothy Morovick on liigan QB:ista ainoa, jonka pallot ovat tavoittaneet pelissä ainoastaan oman joukkueen pelaajia. Nollan intterin Morovick on kuljettanut palloa eteenpäin lähes 200 jaardin heittokeskiarvolla ja ottanut jalat alleen tarvittaessa kolhuja pelkäämättä.  Lauantaina Morovickia vastaan pelaa puolustus, joka on toistaiseksi napsinut liigajoukkueista eniten syötönkatkoja (8 kpl). Mielenkiintoinen match-up tulee olemaan Morovick vastaan UNC:n takakenttä, jonka intteripotentiaali kasvoi eksponentiaalisesti Curtis Slaterin liityttyä joukkueeseen pari viikkoa sitten.

Yksi vaasalaisten mielenkiintoisimmista pelaajista on Khalifan veljestrion nuorin vesa, Raul Khalifa. Huikeita suorituksia Vaahteraliigassa alkukauden peleissä esittänyt Khalifa mahtuu ikänsä puolesta pelaamaan vielä U17-sarjan pelejä. Nyt nuoresta miehestä on tullut yksi joukkueensa ratkaisijoista ja hän johtaa ylivoimaisesti Royalsin sisäistä taklaustilastoa 22 pysäytyksellään.  Nimi ja numero kannattaa painaa mieleen. Tällä kaverilla on iso tulevaisuus jenkkifutiskentillä. Kahlifa pelaa puolustuksessa tukimiehen paikalla.

Vaahteraliigan kuudennen kierroksen ja koko alkukesän päätösottelu United Newland Crusaders – Wasa Royals pelataan Lohjalla UNC:n varakentällä (Ojamon kenttä).  Kannattaa varata aurinkorasvaa matkaan riittävästi, matsin kickoff on klo 16:30.
