Wasa Royals rypisti pakkovoiton Vaahteraliigan lauantaipelissä kotikentällään. Runkosarjan kakkossijansa jo varmistanut Porvoon Butchers ei tullut Vaasaan peruuttelemaan, mutta hävisi lopulta tasaisen pelin lukemin 28-21 (7-7).

Royals ja Butchers pelasivat lauantaina Kaarlen kentällä ottelun, jossa ei ollut tietoakaan siitä, että peli oli vailla merkitystä porvoolaisille. Tasatahtiin pisteitä takoneet joukkueet eivät meinanneet saada ratkottua paremmuuttaan varsinaisella peliajalla, mutta Royals pelinrakentaja Timothy Morovickin lopussa väkisin rypistämä touchdown ratkaisi pelin kotijoukkueelle.

Ottelu alkoi hermostuneissa merkeissä. Molemmat joukkueet päättivät avausdraivinsa pallonmenetyksiin. Ensimmäisenä pallosta luopui Butchers pelinrakentaja Bradon Gwinnerin heitettyä pallon Royslsin nuoren Raul Khalifan hyppysiin. Vain minuuttia myöhemmin Alpha Jalloh pomputti pallon käsistään ja Butchersin tukimies Jussi Mäkelä kaappasi pallon joukkueelleen.

Pallonvaihtokohteliaisuuksien jälkeen joukkueet taistelivat tasaveroisesti kentällä ilman suuria tuloksia. Erityisesti kotijoukkue Royalsin laitahyökkääjien keskittyminen ei ollut parhaassa kuosissa pallojen pudotessa maahan helpissakin tilanteissa. Ottelun ensimmäisen puoliskon aikana 11 Morovickin 19 heitosta ei tuottanut toivottua tulosta. Kun pallot eivät maistuneet vaasalaislaitureille, pelinrakentaja Morovic ratkaisi pelin juoksuillaan.  Ottelun vakuuttavimmaksi pelaajaksi valittu Morovic juoksi ottelussa kolme touchdownia ja haki useampaan kertaan tarvittavat jaardit tiukoissa paikoissa joissa pallo oli vaihtaa omistajaa.

Pohjalaisjoukkueet paha vastustaja Butchersille

Butchers saapui Vaasaan normaalia kapeammalla rosterilla, mutta se ei tuntunut menoa haittaavan. Porvoolaiset lähtivät hakemaan pelistä kauden kahdeksatta voittoaan mutta ei onnistunut siinä. Pohjalaisjoukkueet ovat olleet tällä kaudella Butchersille ylikäymättömiä esteitä. Joukkueen kaikki neljä tappiota ovat tulleet peleistä Royalsia ja Crocodilesia vastaan.

Lauantaina Buthersin työjuhtana toimi keskushyökkääjän paikalla pelannut Micky Kyei. Peräti 23 kertaa palloa kantanut Kyei eteni juoksuillaan 165 jaardia, mutta ei onnistunut kuljettamaan palloa maaliin saakka. Porvoolaisten ainoan juoksumaalin viimeisteli Aleksi Hirvonen.

Tasaisessa pelissä pallonmenetykset osoittautuvat usein ratkaiseviksi tapahtumiksi. Lauantaina Butchers menetti pallon yhden kerran useammin pelinrakentaja Gwinnerin heitettyä lopulta kaksi kertaa pallon vastustajalle. Royalsin ratkaiseva draivi käynnistyi puolustuslinjan Mauno-Martin Blondin nappaamasta intteristä.

Ottelun jälkeen Butchersin juoksu-TD:n viimeistellyt Aleksi Hirvonen kertoi joukkueen painaneen täysillä loppuun asti, vaikka pelillä ei ollut joukkueelle merkitystä sarjasijoituksen kannalta.

Khalifan debyyttikauden taklauslukemaksi 86,5

Ottelun suurimman taklausmäärän kirjasi nimiinsä Butchersin Brandon Wellington (9 kpl). Yhdysvaltalaistukimies osoitti vaarallisuutensa myös pallollisena palautettuaan kertaalleen Royalsin lentopotkun pohjiin saakka. Vaasalaisista eniten taklauksia keräsi jälleen kerran Raul Khalifa (8,5 kpl) jonka debyyttikauden taklausten loppusaldoksi kirjataan komea 86,5. Lukema saattaa nostaa nuoren miehen kotimaisten puolustajien taklauskuninkaaksi kaudella 2023.

Kaikilla viimeisen viikon peleillä iso merkitys

Lauantain voitto merkitsee Royalsille piinaavaa viikon odotusta. Juukkue on nyt pelinsä pelannut ja  jännittää viimeisen liigakierroksen tuloksia. 

Royalsin voitto toi Kuopio Steelersille suuria paineita harteilleen viimeiseen peliinsä.  Royals on nyt tasapisteissä Roostersin ja Steelersin kanssa. Jossittelua tehdään tulevan viikon aikana useammassa pukuhuoneessa. Jos Roosters voittaa torstaina Wolverinesin ja Crocodiles voittaa Steelersin, ratkaistaan viimeinen playoff-sijoitus kalkulaattoreilla Royalsin ja Steelersin kesken mm. voittojen vahvuuden ja voitettujen joukkueiden voittoprosentteja vertaamalla. Tällä hetkellä tuossa vertailussa vaasalaiset ovat vahvoilla. Jos Steelers kuitenkin suistaa Crocot kahden pelin tappioputkeen, on peli selvä ja kuopiolaiset jatkavat pelejään.

Jokaisella vaahteraliigan viimeisen kierroksen pelillä on iso merkitys lopullisten playoff-joukkueiden ratkaisussa.

Lauantain vaahteraliigapelissä kotijoukkueella on suuret panokset. Wasa Royalsilla on edelleen oljenkorsi, jota myöten kavuta sarjan pudotuspeleihin. Oljenkorsi katkeaa, mikäli runkosarjan kakkospaikan jo varmistanut Butchers ottaa Kaarlen kentällä voiton.

Wasa Royals on pelannut vuoristoratamaisen kauden, jossa jo hetken näytti siltä, että mahdollisuus playoff-peliin karkaa käsistä. Muiden ristiin pelaaminen ja nousujohteisen oman vireen takia toivo elää yhä kuninkaan miesten haarniskan sisällä.

Porvoon Butchers lähtee lauantain vaahteraliigapeliin levänneenä ja täysin paineettomassa tilassa. Joukkueen sarjasijoitusta ei voi enää horjuttaa, eikä joukkueella ole mahdollisuuksia lähteä taktikoimaan itselle välierävastustajaakaan.

Morovic juoksi joukkueiden edellisessä kohtaamisessa 4 touchdownia

Royals lähtee lauantain elintärkeään peliin vahvalla kokoonpanolla. Joukkueen nimimiehistä Rufail Khalifa ja tuore ruotsalaisvahvistus Jatta Njie eivät pue peliin, mutta muutoin nuori joukkue marssittaa kentälle voittoon kykenevän kokoonpanon. Royalsilla on takanaan nukka tappio Crocodilesille Vaasassa pelatusta BotniaBowlista, mutta joukkue osoitti pelissä kykenevänsä haastamaan hyvänä päivänä kenet tahansa sarjan joukkueista. Lauantaina tuon haasteen kohteeksi joutuu kauden 2023 yllätysmenestyjä Butchers.

Royals otti Butcherista henkisen yliotteen joukkueiden aiemmassa pelissä Porvoon keskuskentällä. Vaasalaiset veivät toisen peliviikon ottelussa pisteet mukanaan lukemin 14-35. Lauantaina Royals-pelinrakentaja Timothy Morovickilta odotetaan vähintään samanlaista suoritusta kuin toukokuussa. Morovic juoksi itse Porvoossa neljä touchdownia ja heitti yhden.

Porvoolla vain hävittävää

Porvoo Butcherslla on lauantain vieraspelissä vain hävittävää. Jenkkifutisotteluun ei voi lähteä pelaamaan puolivaloilla, mutta loukkaantumisten tarkoituksellinen välttäminen johtaa usein heikkoihin pelisuorituksiin. Perjantain vaahteraliigapelissä Crocodiles otti pataan Roostersilta himmailtuaan pelin ensimmäisen puoliajan kotipelissään.

Porvoolaiset lähtevät peliin ilman kahta puolustuksensa tuloksekkainta Nikoa, Pennasta ja Roikoa. Joukkueella on kuitenkin rosterissaan riittävästi talenttia josta osoituksena liigan toiseksi pitävin puolustus, kun mittarina vastustajalle päästetyt pisteet per ottelu. Vaikka joukkueen heittopuolustus ei ole yhtä korkealla tilastoissa, löytyy Butcersin takakentältä sarjan heittopuolustustilaston kärkimies, Zachary Wright. Hyökkäyspelissään Porvoolaiset ovat tukeutuneet pelinrakentaja Brandon Gwinnerin heittoihin.  Buthersin kotimaiset laitahyökkääjät ovat sarjan eliittiä ja kykenevät ratkaisemaan pelejään nopeudellaan ja kiinniottovarmuudellaan. Todennäköistä onkin, että lauantain pelissä vaasalaiset joutuvat peluuttamaan omaa tähtilaituriaan Alpha Jallohia läpi pelin kahteen suuntaan.
